Generic Cialis: What It Is and What to Verify Before Buying

4.4
(87)

Generic Cialis is tadalafil. That is the whole answer to the question most people arrive with: the generic name for Cialis is tadalafil, it is the identical active ingredient, and it is sold by many manufacturers under many brand names once the original patent expires. Cialis is Eli Lilly’s brand name for it.

The harder question is the second half of this article’s title. “Generic Cialis” is sold by US pharmacies, by telehealth services, and by a large number of overseas websites, and the gap in quality between the best and worst of those is enormous. So below is what the phrase actually means, and then six things worth checking before you buy from anyone — including us.

What Does “Generic Cialis” Actually Mean?

A generic medicine contains the same active ingredient as a brand-name one, at the same strength, in the same form. When a drug’s patent expires, other manufacturers may make and sell it. Cialis came off patent, so tadalafil is now widely available generically.

Here is the distinction that matters most, and it is the one most commonly blurred:

  • FDA-approved generic tadalafil exists in the United States. Several manufacturers make it, it has been through the FDA’s approval process for generics, and a US pharmacy can dispense it against a prescription.
  • Indian-manufactured brands such as Vidalista and Tadarise are not FDA-approved products. Tadalafil, the ingredient, is approved. Those specific branded products have not been through FDA review.

Both of those sentences are true at the same time. A page that tells you only the first one — “generic tadalafil is FDA-approved” — while selling you the second is being accurate and misleading in the same breath. We sell the second kind, and that is why the distinction is printed here rather than left for you to work out.

What Tadalafil Does

Tadalafil is a PDE5 inhibitor. It blocks an enzyme in the blood vessels of the penis, which lets cGMP accumulate, which relaxes the smooth muscle in the vessel walls, which increases blood flow. An erection follows sexual stimulation — the medicine does not produce one on its own.

Its distinguishing feature is duration. Per the NHS, tadalafil’s effect lasts up to 36 hours, against four to six for sildenafil, because its half-life is roughly 17.5 hours rather than about four. That 36 hours is a window in which an erection is achievable, not a continuous state.

It is approved at 2.5, 5, 10 and 20 mg. Ten milligrams is the usual on-demand starting dose; 20 mg is the maximum single dose; 2.5 and 5 mg are used daily for continuous readiness. The FDA-approved labeling is the source for all of that, and MedlinePlus has a readable summary.

Common side effects are headache, indigestion, flushing, nasal congestion and — characteristically for tadalafil — back and muscle pain that often appears 12 to 24 hours after a dose. Uncommon but serious: priapism, sudden vision loss, sudden hearing loss, chest pain. Those need emergency care.

Nitrates are an absolute contraindication — the AUA guideline and the Merck Manual are unambiguous on it. Because tadalafil persists for around 36 hours, that interaction stays dangerous across the whole period — considerably longer than with sildenafil, and a genuinely important point for anyone who carries a nitrate spray for angina.

Six Things to Verify Before Buying Tadalafil Online

According to the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, only around 5% of the roughly 35,000 active online pharmacy websites comply with US pharmacy laws and standards. That figure is worth sitting with for a moment. It means the default assumption about an unfamiliar pharmacy website should be scepticism, not trust.

The FDA runs a consumer programme on exactly this, BeSafeRx, and it is a better first stop than any pharmacy’s own trust page. NABP’s consumer tool at safe.pharmacy lets you look up whether a site is accredited.

Here is a checklist you can run on any site selling tadalafil. It is written to be used against this one as readily as against any other.

1. Does it require a valid prescription?

This is the single most informative question, and it is close to a pass/fail on its own. Tadalafil is prescription-only in the United States. A website that will sell it to you with no prescription, or that offers to “issue” one through a thirty-second form with no clinician involved, is telling you how it handles every other rule as well.

“No prescription needed” is not a convenience feature. It is the clearest warning sign there is.

2. Can you reach a licensed pharmacist?

A legitimate pharmacy gives you a way to ask a pharmacist a question before you buy — about an interaction with your other medicines, for instance. Look for a named contact route that reaches a person with a credential, not just a support ticket queue.

3. Is it licensed, and can you check?

US pharmacies are licensed by state boards of pharmacy, and those licences are publicly checkable. NABP also runs the .pharmacy accreditation programme, and the FDA’s BeSafeRx pages include a tool for locating state-licensed online pharmacies.

The test is not whether a site displays a badge. Anyone can put an image on a page. The test is whether you can independently confirm the licence in a register you reached yourself.

4. Does it name the manufacturer?

You should be able to see who actually made the tablets. Vidalista is made by Centurion Laboratories. Tadarise is made by Sunrise Remedies. Tadalista is made by Fortune Healthcare. A site that will not tell you, or that attributes a product to the wrong company, either does not know or does not think you should.

Cross-attribution is extremely common on these pages, and it is a useful tell: if a site cannot get the manufacturer right, treat its dosing and safety information with the same confidence.

5. Is the medical content reviewed, by someone named?

“Medically reviewed” means nothing unless you can see who did it. Look for a named reviewer with a credential, a review date, and a link to a bio page with enough detail that you could verify the licence through a state board.

A byline that leads nowhere is worse than no byline at all, because it is a claim of oversight that turns out to be decorative. Run that check on this page as readily as on anyone else’s.

6. Is it honest about FDA status?

Check whether the site distinguishes between an approved active ingredient and an approved product. “FDA-approved sildenafil” or “FDA-approved tadalafil” attached to an Indian-manufactured brand is the specific sleight of hand to watch for — the ingredient is approved, the product is not, and running those together is a deliberate blur rather than an accident.

A related check: does the site tell you when a strength sits above the FDA-approved maximum? Tadalafil is approved up to 20 mg, and 40, 60 and 80 mg products exist. A retailer that lists those without mentioning it is leaving out the most important thing about them.

Two more warning signs

A price far below everything else on the market usually means something. So does packaging that arrives with no manufacturer markings, no batch number or no expiry date. The FDA maintains a running list of sexual enhancement products found to contain undeclared drug ingredients, and ED medicines are among the most counterfeited in the world precisely because demand is high and embarrassment keeps people from asking questions.

Which Tadalafil Product Matches Brand Cialis?

If the question is simply which generic corresponds to a standard Cialis dose: tadalafil 20 mg is the approved maximum single dose and the standard on-demand strength, and Vidalista 20 mg matches it exactly. Tadarise 20 mg is the same dose from a different manufacturer.

That said, 20 mg is not where most people should start. The usual starting dose is 10 mg, and a meaningful number of men do well on 5 mg taken daily instead. Which of those applies is a prescriber’s call, and it is worth having properly rather than defaulting to the biggest number on the shelf.

We have written up the individual strengths and ranges separately: Vidalista 20 mg, Tadarise 20 mg, and the full comparisons of every Vidalista strength and every Tadarise strength, each with the FDA status of every dose in the table.

Buying Generic Cialis in the USA

Tadalafil is prescription-only in the United States, and a valid prescription is required regardless of which brand or which country the tablets come from.

Our tadalafil range covers the generic brands at strengths from 2.5 mg upward. Tadalafil is an FDA-approved active ingredient; the specific brands we stock are not FDA-approved products; and some strengths sold in this category exceed the FDA-approved maximum. Those three sentences are on this page because the checklist above would flag their absence.

Run the six checks. Run them here too.

Frequently Asked Questions About Generic Cialis

What is the generic name for Cialis?

Tadalafil. Cialis is Eli Lilly’s brand name for tadalafil, and generic versions contain the identical active ingredient at the same strengths.

Is generic Cialis as effective as brand Cialis?

A generic containing the same active ingredient at the same dose is expected to work the same way. The relevant question is not brand versus generic but whether the specific product is what it claims to be — which is what the verification checklist above is for.

Is generic Cialis FDA-approved?

FDA-approved generic tadalafil does exist in the United States and is dispensed by US pharmacies against a prescription. But many products sold online as “generic Cialis” are Indian-manufactured brands such as Vidalista or Tadarise, which are not FDA-approved products even though tadalafil itself is an approved ingredient. Those are two different things and it is worth checking which one you are being offered.

How long does generic Cialis last?

Up to 36 hours, the same as the brand, because it is the same molecule. That is a window during which an erection is achievable with sexual stimulation, not a continuous effect.

Do I need a prescription for generic Cialis?

Yes. Tadalafil is prescription-only in the United States at every strength. Any site offering it without one is operating outside US law, and that should change how you read everything else it tells you.

What dose of generic Cialis should I take?

That is a prescriber’s decision. For context, tadalafil is usually started at 10 mg on demand and adjusted by response, 20 mg is the approved maximum single dose, and 2.5 or 5 mg daily is an alternative approach. A lower dose that works is a better result than a higher one.

How can I tell if an online pharmacy is legitimate?

Start with whether it requires a prescription, whether you can reach a licensed pharmacist, and whether its licence is independently checkable. The FDA’s BeSafeRx programme exists for this, and NABP estimates that only about 5% of online pharmacy sites meet US standards.

What is the difference between Vidalista, Tadarise and Tadalista?

They are different brands of generic tadalafil from different Indian manufacturers — Centurion Laboratories, Sunrise Remedies and Fortune Healthcare respectively. The active ingredient is the same; the brand, maker and price differ.
