Cholesterol – It is a waxy or far like substance which is found in the cell of the body. Cholesterol is a fatty substance which is formed in the liver. The liver produces around 80 percent of the cholesterol in the body and the remaining by food such as eggs, meat, fish, poultry and dairy products. There is no cholesterol in foods which are formed with the help of plants.
The content of cholesterol is in the bloodstream which is controlled by the liver. After taking food, the cholesterol which is present in the food is absorbed from the small intestine and stored in the liver. When the body requires cholesterol, it may be concealed by the liver.
When a large amount of cholesterol is present in the body then it leads to health problems in the future. Most of the people can have their cholesterol levels healthy by using the cholesterol test. If a large amount of cholesterol in the blood stream then increases the chance of heart attacks and strokes.
Importance of cholesterol - Cholesterol plays an important role in the body. It is essential for the brain, tissue and skin. Cholesterol is used in producing vitamin D and steroid hormones that keep muscles, bones and teeth healthy. It is also used to make bile that improves to digest the food.
Causes of high cholesterol – High fat diet, obesity, and inactivity are the most common causes of high cholesterol in the body. Genetic cause is another cause of high cholesterol in which decreases the ability of the body to metabolize cholesterol or cause the liver to produce too much cholesterol.
Types of Cholesterol – There are several types of cholesterol which are discussed below –
- LDL Cholesterol - It stands for low density lipoprotein cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is also called bad cholesterol which is very harmful for the hearts due to it carries large amount of cholesterol to tissues, and stored in the arteries which increases the risk of heart attack and strokes. When cholesterol is increases it may narrow the veins, decreasing the movement of blood to the heart or the brain and increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Thus the lower cholesterol is good for our health.
There are several food items which are responsible for the increasing of LDL cholesterol such as
- Whole –milk dairy products
- Egg yolks
- Fried foods
Generally Trans fat are placed in supplying baked goods and stick margarine prepared with partly hydrogenated vegetable oil also increase the LDL cholesterol.
- HDL Cholesterol – It stands for high density lipoprotein. HDL cholesterol is also known as good cholesterol which is good for our health. According to American Heart Association (AHA) HDL cholesterol reduces the bad cholesterol from veins to the liver in which it splits down and removed from the body.
When the levels of HDL Cholesterol are low then it enhances the risk of heart diseases and other heart problems. Physical exercise, avoid smoking, and lowering weight are the main activity to increase HDL cholesterol.
- VLDL – It stands for Very Low Density Lipoproteins. VLDL is also a bad cholesterol just like as LDL. There is another different type of fat is triglycerides which is found in the blood. Triglycerides are also present in fatty foods and made from other food energy sources such as carbohydrates. Triglycerides provide fuel for the body but high level of this type of fat causes heart problems. As per American Heart Association (AHA), to prevent high level of Triglycerides depend upon the changes in lifestyle such as lowering weight, avoid alcohol,, and physical exercise. Triglycerides contain large amount of fat and very small protein. When the level of VLDL is high in the blood then it can be put down in the artery walls and close them.
- IDL – It stands for Intermediate Density Lipoproteins. IDL is same as LDL in which carry a variety of triglycerides fats and cholesterol. This type of cholesterol is lies between LDL and VLDL cholesterol in terms of how much fat they provide. Some IDL particles are quickly taken up by the liver for circulation in which they undergo further triglyceride hydrolysis by hepatic lipase that are converted into LDL.
How to lower Cholesterol – When you have high cholesterol it may reduce by consuming low fat foods and physical exercise for at least 30 minutes daily. Physical exercise helps in reducing the weight which may lower the cholesterol in the body.
You also reduce cholesterol by avoiding fried foods and alcohol and also with the help of medications. If the bad cholesterol reduces then it lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

- Race – There are certain races which may have an increased risk of high cholesterol such as African Americans typically have higher HDL and LDL cholesterol levels than whites.
- Alcohol – It may also increases the high level of cholesterol in our body
